A new exhibition “Face à la mer”

It takes you facing the sea, to Barracks 7 next to the Vauban Tower. You’ll relive the maritime history of Cotentin, this peninsula that stretches out toward the borders of England!

Tatihou has a rich history full of twists and turns. The naval battle of Barfleur-La Hougue was one of its major turning points. After this event, the island became a strategic link in a vast coastal defense system designed by Louis XIV and implemented by his general commissioner of fortifications, Marquis de Vauban.

This small territory, on the edge of a kingdom and within reach of enemy naval powers, gradually strengthened its defenses and evolved with the pace of artillery and battles. Today open to the public, the island, rich in preserved natural heritage and fortifications listed as UNESCO World Heritage, illustrates better than any other place the tumultuous history of maritime border.

Land at the edge, it’s a privileged spot to watch coastal changes and contemporary maritime issues.
